Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador 2019

February, 2019

“This bay could be one of the most beautiful ports of the world.”

View of Bahia from the Cross. Art by Jim Petersen. Our dear friend who captured the heart of Bahia.

In his book, The Secret of Paradise, Patricia Tamariz wrote that Thomas de Berlanga a friar of the Dominican Order who discovered Galapagos Island on March 10, 1535 and then sailed to the coast of Ecuador reaching Bahia.  When the Friar’s ship reached Bahia de Caraquez he wrote, “From this bay to Puerto Viejo there were 9 leagues along the coast south.  This bay could be one of the most beautiful ports of the world.”

When you behold the bay you see the green hillsides and the Chone River winding off into the distance.

There is a sense of peaceful yet powerful energy here.

Modern day sailors still sail into the bay and dock at Puerto Amistad, which means Friendship Port.
